“In Memoriam: Mourning Art in America”
"Memorial for Polly Botsford and Her Children" was executed in watercolor by an unknown artist in New England about 1815. It will be on view at the Abby Aldrich Rockfeller Folk Art Museum in the exhibit "In Memoriam: Mourning Art in Early America."
When George Washington died in 1799, the national outpouring of grief sparked a new kind of memorial artwork in which amateurs and professional artists alike mourned the nation’s loss through needlework, watercolors and other media. Not long afterward, images remembering lost relatives became just as fashionable, resulting in a tidal wave of works featuring often intimate expressions of bereavement. “In Memoriam: Mourning Art in America” includes more than 60 examples. -- Mark St. John Erickson, Daily Press
