Conveniently located on the corner of S. Witchduck Rd. and Princess Anne Rd. in Kempsville (Virginia Beach), Señor Iguanas is set in the most ironic of surroundings: churches, schools, and neighborhoods. All of these aspects and more, aid in making it such a comfortable spot to eat and hang out.
Upon entering, be sure not to be startled by the large plant-filled tank, which Iggy, the 4 ft. long giant Iguana (from which the restaurant deems its name), calls home. You can’t miss such an attraction because it’s located right as you walk in. Incase you’re wondering, it’s real!
Drink specials combined with good music provide the perfect atmosphere for decent “pre-gaming” before truly beginning your night.
Drinks: There’s a full service bar stocked to aid the bar staff in preparing whatever concoction you can muster. Señor Iguanas provides drink specials just about every night of the week, some of which come in souvenir shot glasses and mugs. Although you may see most people around you taking back a cold beer or two, the “liquor drinker” is equally accommodated. Next time you’re there, be sure to try their signature shot, appropriately named the Iguana Bite.
Décor: Large mirrors, marble tiled countertops/floors, oak wood dinning tables, ample seating, plasma screens, and an indoor fountain dressed with a signature neon sign to remind any newcomer where they are, all surround the shape-shift dance floor that sits window-side for everyone to notice as they pull up. Little need for a strobe light, large open windows line the perimeter of this cozy hole in the wall, giving it plenty of light from the headlights of passing cars. Step outside and relax on the coverless patio complete with torch lanterns and a brick surfaced fire pit, surrounded by red plush sofas.
Service: Back inside, the glowing blue tiles that encase the full size bar, are the only things separating visitors from the gorgeous and friendly bar staff aptly prepared to serve anything requested. On a typical night you might be welcomed by anywhere from 2 to 4 bartenders. As if the food isn’t appeasing enough, the drinks seldom disappoint anyone.
Crowd: Look around most nights and you’ll find a room full of outgoing and friendly locals, out trying to indulge in a good time. The crowd here is typically mixed, and more or less of younger age, but lends itself to appeasing individuals of any legal age. From young professionals and business owners, to college students and tourists, the doors seem to be open to everyone.
Sounds: Wednesday through Saturday, come out and jam to the latest house, old school, hip-hop, reggaeton, and dancehall hits courtesy of Virginia’s own DJ Silver (or guest DJs on different occasions). DJ Greg Again, SMEDIUM, and J Fury are just some of the ones that have spun in the past. Thursdays are generously dedicated to the techno and house lovers, as well as those who couldn’t make it out the night before. Satellite radio serves as a decent substitute on the less busy nights.
Dress Code: Honestly, a dress code does exist. The casual look is appreciated but not required. As with any establishment, just be conscientious and respectable. Ladies always seem to be sexy, and sometimes dressed down in the typical nice top and jeans. Those in a fancier mood might turn heads in high heels, and maybe even a dress of some sort. As for the fellas, wear something that actually fits you. If you’re going to wear a t-shirt, try to find one with a logo.
Bottom Line: Delicious food, good drinks, fabulous service, and even better music! Together, they all form the perfect equation for an excellent night. Regulars will surely reaffirm, Señor Iguanas should definitely be a top item on your to-do list, any night of the week.
