Met opera returns to local movie theaters, radio

Finnish soprano Karita Mattila will the title role in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The opera will be broadcast on WHRO-FM (90.3) and also will be relayed live in high definition to movie theaters around the world. Locally, "Manon Lescaut" can be viewed at AMC Hampton Towne Centre in Hampton and Regal Cinemas in MacArthur Center in Norfolk.

Mattila's performance was called "riveting" by The New York Times. James Levine will conduct the opera, which also features tenor Marcello Giordani as the Chevalier des Grieux and baritone Dwayne Croft as Lescaut. Those who attend a movie showing also will see soprano Renée Fleming interview artists involved with the production during intermission.
