Valentine's Day is just a month away and Hollywood studios are seizing the opportunity to re-issue some of their classic titles ahead of the big day.
"When Harry Met Sally..." has grown into a sort of modern romantic comedy template since its original release in 1989. In case you've never caught one of its zillion cable TV airings, it's the tale of two friends (Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan) who bicker over whether or not it's possible for a man and woman to just be friends...with inevitably romantic results.
This fresh "Collector's Edition" boasts an audio commentary from director Rob Reiner, writer Nora Ephron and Crystal, but not, conspicuously, Ryan. There's also a ton of featurettes on the making of and legacy of the film, plus numerous deleted scenes and the original trailer.
Meg Ryan doesn't star in "An Affair to Remember" but her character's obsession with the romantic drama in "Sleepless in Seattle" has helped keep the older film's memory going strong.
Hollywood legends Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr play the film's star-crossed lovers. The studio is just a little late in the release of this "50th Anniversary Edition"—the film was released in 1957—but a classic is a classic.
A few of the features on the two-disc set are recycled from a previous "Special Edition" release, including a commentary by singer Marni Nixon (who dubbed Kerr's singing voice in the film) and film historian Joseph McBride, an "AMC Backstory" special and an old newsreel from the film's premiere. But there are also fresh featurettes on Grant, Kerr, director Leo McCarey and producer Jerry Wald, plus stills, trailers and posters.
