"Kingdom of the Spiders" (1977)
Credit:Dimension Pictures
What goes wrong: A new breed of super-spiders with extra-deadly venom attacks a small Arizona town.
Who the movie blames: Ranchers using pesticides that killed the spiders’ food source, forcing them to “team up” to take down larger animals.
The real disaster: William Shatner isn't bad in the lead role of “Rack,” a horse-riding vet whose nickname is explained with a charming anecdote ending with his brother’s death in ’Nam. But the spiders have a particular affinity for hiding in trucks and planes and killing the driver or pilot mid-journey to create a fiery crash. Did anyone consider that maybe hitching all these rides just meant they wanted to get out of town for the weekend?
