"Airport '77" (1977)
What goes wrong: In the third film in this series, hijackers steal a jetliner full of aging Hollywood stars and Jimmy Stewart’s artwork, only to crash into the ocean and sink to the bottom intact.
Who the movie blames: The hijackers, who fail to account for an oil derrick when planning their below-the-radar flight plan and embarrassingly crash into it.
The real disaster: It’s actually something of an accomplishment to take a cast of Hollywood’s classiest actors and make them so unlikable that it’s preferable to leave them trapped at the bottom of the ocean. Lee Grant’s alcoholic character is a disaster movie all her own. She’s so shrill and clichéd that her husband — played with dignity, as always, by Christopher Lee — volunteers for a suicide mission just to get away.
