A straight-faced spy satire set in 1955 focused on the exploits of OSS 117 (Jean Dujardin, very game), a French special agent who goes undercover in Egypt and clashes with a strong-willed, but stunningly beautiful, local (Bérénice Bejo).

Big question:
Can the French spy spoof find some fraction of the "Austin Powers" franchise's international audience?

Skip it:
OSS 117 is a well known figure from French novels and films and the filmmakers’ comic conceit is to play one of his old adventures straight, with every bit of old fashioned political incorrectness intact. The clueless disrespect of Muslim culture feels surprisingly timely, but the sexism and gay-panic fails to find the right balance between silly and sophisticated. As for 117's obsession with chickens...the less said, the better.

Catch it: At least when the jokes miss (and they do more than half the time) you can imagine they were lost in translation. That’s more than you can say for an Adam Sandler comedy.

Bottom line: As the country responsible for unleashing "Austin Powers in Goldmember" upon the world, we probably deserved worse payback than this. But don't expect OSS 117 to compete with Maxwell Smart this summer, let alone 007 come the fall.

Bonus: Dujardin was one of the best actor nominees at France's prestigious César awards last year for his performance in this film.
