Getting her introduction to the world of music at the age of two, Angela Hudson has had a flair for creating ever since then. She started writing music in the fourth grade and began playing the piano at the age of 12. Angela is trained in classical, country, rock, pop, and jazz which cascades into her unique melodies. We had an opportunity to talk to this Hampton Roads resident to explore her creative processes, extraordinary charm, and diverse musicial capabilities.
How did the band form? When?
I starting singing very young. My mom and other church members site the age at 2 when I sang “Jesus Loves Me”
at Whites Chapel in Rehobeth, Delaware.
Did you grow up in the Hampton Roads area or relocate here?
I relocated here. I’m from the East Coast (Delaware) and my family and I moved to Illinois. I always wanted come
back to the East Coast so after attending Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, I came to Hampton Roads.
Who are your influences? What gets you inspired to create?
The world inspires me! Conversations people have, paintings, photography, movies, and my life. It varies. My influences are Peggy Lee, Patsy Cline, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Portishead, Poe, The Beatles, The Rhonettes, Kelli Ali, Aimee Mann, Shirley Manson, Chris Gantry (he coached me a lot with my writing-“Dreams of an Everyday Housewife), Rose Knight (singer/songwriter from Nashville), Francis Rabanes (my producer), and my parents (they met at band rehearsal.)
What local bands should we keep an eye out for? What bands do you enjoy sharing a bill with?
Of course, I love my producer and his music, Francis Rabanes. On the radio I listen to Jae Sinnett often. He is a local performer and has a radio show called “Sinnett in Session”. I love the guys from By Design. All of the Tidewater Arts Outreach performers are very talented. I also llike the jazz of JuJu and the After Hours.I have shared the bill with Blackbird Pond, which is a great rock band. Also, I have shared the bill with Bitter:Sweet (but they are National) and I love their music. I have shared the bill with some great people, and there are so many great performers around here. I
heard it’s something in the water. I really think this place is an untapped music resource.
How would you describe your music to people?
Well someone described it as “Film Noir” except it’s music. It’s a combination of all my loves: Jazz, Pop, Rock, and Trip Hop. Somehow, it comes out to be me. I am a singer/songwriter/pianist.
What are your favorite venues to play at? How would you like to see the available venues to change when booking shows?
Paying the bills is always good! Most of the places have a variety but I always like to see a good variety of different types of music. I would like to see MORE music venues. Of course, since I play the piano, more piano clubs would be nice. I think sometimes people just want a place to chill. All the venues I have played around here have been very kind and helpful.
What do you want to see from the media to better help get your music out there for Hampton Roads to see? More interviews? More spotlights? More reviews? Better access to posting your show dates to their calendars?
All of that would be great! People can’t hear my music or other locals music if they don’t know about it.
Who primarily writes the songs? Is there a certain process or does it come out during practice?
I write all my music. Sometimes I have a co-writer like on my EP, my friend, Julienne Martinson wrote the lyrics
for “Just Another Day”.
How do you market your music to the public? What seems to work best for you for letting people know about your
shows?
Myspace, Nextcat, newspaper articles, email, and hopefully word of mouth. Myspace is a great invention for independent musicians. The whole world is connected on one page.
Do you have any cd's / merchandise available for fans to purchase? Where can they buy them?
I have an E.P. available through CD BABY. You can get there through my website www.angelahudson.com and
Various webpages that have my mp3’s available.
When not playing your music, what are your hobbies?
I love art! Painting and photography are two of my favorite mediums. You can see some of them on my webpage
or my Myspace.
