Dining at 99 Main is...
By Joe Ozelis from Seaford, VA, June 9, 2003

Overall rating:

Dining at 99 Main is a pleasant and satisfying experience - the food is fresh, well presented, and the recipes are imaginative. On our recent Saturday evening visit, however, service suffered from a few miscues (waiter forgot to put the appetizer order in, hence it cane after our salads, additional plates for the appetizer were not brought, nor a spoon with which to serve it). None of these were particularly egregious, but nevertheless shouldn't be expected at a venue that wants to stand out above the rest. Regardless, the duck breast and rack of lamb we had were excellent, as was the watercress salad with fried oysters. The wild mushroom and polenta appetizer suffered from a lack of identity. The cold mixed seafood appetizer would probably have been a better choice. The creative menu offers an interesting array of times without overwhelming. However, for a place that bills its cuisine as being French influenced, there is a paucity of true French dishes. Apart from the requisite escargot appetizer, you will not find any pate, salmon mousse, Coquille St. Jacques, Entrecote Bordelaise, Coq Au Vin, etc. Nor is the typical cheese plate available for desert. The only French entr¿was Boeuf Bourguignon (though my duck breast entr¿was similar to the classic Magret de Canard). This is a shame, as the Tidewater area has, apart from the over-hyped LeYaca, few French restaurants worthy of consideration. In toto, 99 Main provides an agreeable dining experience.

Great food, great menu, great...

Great food, great menu, great wine, great service, unusually pleasant surroundings--one of our favorites and well worth the price. When I consider what people pay for vastly inferior food and service in restaurants all over the Hampton Roads area, I am amazed that anyone could think 99 Main is too expensive. We have eaten there many times and have never been disappointed; AND the ambiance is very nice--very like what you might find in a neighborhood restaurant outside of Paris. The wine selection includes far more French wines than other restaurants in the area. Good bar, too. I would drive to Virginia Beach to eat at 99 Main if I had too--but WOW, I don't have to! Even better.

We started our evening with...

We started our evening with a Martini and it was outstanding. The Bartender was personable, professional, and proficient. we sat in the less formal seating area and ejoyed the atmosphere. Our server was attentive and friendly. We could not have asked for better service throughout the meal. We had three courses and each was excellent. I found each item to be imaginative, pleasing to eye and good on the palate. One can choose from very light to a meal in one. My only negative comment was that I thought it might be a little over priced. However, because our selection of good restaurants in the area is so sparce, this is certainly one of the best on the Peninsula. We will be returning soon.

WHEN WE CALLED TO GET RESERVATIONS WE WERE TOLD TO JUST DROP BY AND WE WOULD BE WORKED IN. TO OUR SURPRISE THE STAFF COULD NOT OF BEEN NICER ON OUR ARRIVAL. WE WERE SEATED IN A COZY SPOT NEAR THE BAR AND RECEIVED GREAT CARE AND ATTENTION BY EVERYONE.

THE FOOD WAS FANTASTIC AND THE SERVICE WAS EXCELLANT. WE HAD SCALLOPS ON THE HALF SHELL WITH A RED SAUCE,(I THINK IT WAS RUEMOCKEE) PASTA WITH LOBSTER AND A SWEET TASTING RED SAUCE ACCOMPANIED BY A HUGE GRILLED CHICKEN BREAST STUFFED WITH FETA CHEESE AND A MILD WHITE GRAVY. I ENJOYED EVERY BITE AND FOLLOWED UP WITH A DESERT. I CAN NOT SAY ENOUGH NICE THINGS ABOUT THIS EXPERIANCE.THE FOOD THE ATMOSPHERE AND THE SERVICE ARE THE BEST ANYWHERE. I'LL BE BACK AGAIN!!!!!!
