Espeto na Brasa (translated from Portuguese to English as "Spit on a Skewer") is the newest dining experience to hit Norfolk. Centered in the heart of the Granby Street, Espeto na Brasa is an authentic Brazilian restaurant by every measure.
As you enter, your senses might be overwhelmed. With a wooden entrance, high ceilings, massive columns, white cloth on wrought iron and chandelier lighting, the scenery can be breath-taking. Authentic Brazilian music is projected throughout the venue. By the time you've given your attention to the hostess waiting to seat you, you begin to smell an array of aromas permeating the restaurant.
Don't expect a menu. After you're seated you'll be briefed on how to dine Brazilian-style. A self-serve salad bar dressed with traditional greens and pastas, non-traditional goat cheese and charcuterie, soups and fruit on ice is the start—and, given Brazilian cuisine's emphasis on meat, for vegetarians it is the end to the evening.
Everything from pork sirloin to chicken heart is available and you can actually taste the fire from the grill. This place is definitely for meat lovers, with skewer offerings including steak, chicken, and filet mignon wrapped in bacon, among many other options.
Homemade desserts are available. I recommend the vanilla cheesecake served at room temperature.
As for prices, the salad bar is $20 and dinner is $34. Mix drinks are roughly $7 and the dessert...well, you can't put a price on good cheesecake!
If you have the opportunity to engage Alex, who is one of the owners, you'll find he is as genuine as the restaurant. He'd like our Metromix readers to know that "Espeto na Brasa was created to share Brazilian culture with the community. Everything from the scenery and music to the food selection is authentic and you're in for a truly unique dining experience. We're family owned...my mother, brother and I have brought to Norfolk the food we grew up on."
Definitely visit Espeto na Brasa if you're up for something new, something rich and something memorable.
