In my opinion, Das Waldcafe has the best, and most authentic, German cuisine in the area. I've never been disappointed in a meal since I first dined there over 15 years ago. The only negative is that occasionally it is very busy, and as such, may take a little while until you get your meal.

I think the last reviewer may have some misinformation. I had a wonderful meal on my last visit to Das Waldcafe, and did not see new owners. Mr & Mrs Hollingsworth were still there. My gulasch and spatzle were as tasty as they have always been. The beer was nice and cold, and the service was average. I have found this to be a great place for high quality food without pretense. The hazelnut cake was moist and as good as ever! Keep up the good work. Perhaps you might work on your service.

I have eaten at Das Wald often over the past years, but I don't think I will be back. The last 2 times I went there (05) I have noticed some negative changes. It seems the place was taken over by new owners. None of the long time waitresses where there (i.e. the girls from Scotland & Germany) & the food quality had changed too. My Gulasch was dry & old (the previous owners would never serve old food) the Spatzle were to soft & watery & drowned in butter (those used to be my favorite) & the salad was old. To make matters worse, the apple crumb cake was horrible. Our waitress was (I believe some one said she is the sister of the previous owners) so rude it is hard to understand why anyone would employ her in a job where service is a must. I am sorry to say but from now on I will have to find German food else where. Unfortunately that is what happens when new people take over. To bad

I lived in the Netherlands for 3 years, and made many visits across the border to Germany, to sample their tasty, and hearty, fare. This is just what you will find at DasWald... very well-prepared and tasty German dishes. The surroundings are minimal and rather plain, yet every visit I have made has found fresh vases of flowers on almost every table. I've personally never had a problem with service... my waitresses have always been pleasant and helpful. In fact my only complaint would be that there is very little... okay, there is no 'lighter fare' style food on the menu. But I guess when you're eating German, that's not really what you're seeking. ;) I would highly recommend DasWaldcafe to anyone seeking good, hearty food straight from the Rheinland. (note: be sure to try their regular house salad. The dressing is to die for.)

Having lived in Germany half my life, I always appreciate a good German meal. You can get one at Das Waldcafe. The Jaegerschnitzel is wonderful, as is the potato salad and spaetzle. In my opinion, the prices are a bit high, but I suppose one must factor in the extra money it must take to get the correct cuts of veal and pork to make all those delectable meals! When I was there last night, our meal was served in 10 minutes! I couldn't believe it. We had barely ordered and there was our food. Simply amazing.

Having eaten at Das Waldcafe for the last six years, I have to take
exception with the most recent review of this restaurant. Unlike Mr. Bernard Devaney, who obviously has some problem with this restaurant (can't be the food, because it is fabulous)I LOVE Das Waldcafe, I consider it to be one of the best (if not THE best) restaurant on the Peninsula. As for his comment on the red cabbage, get real pal, I have eaten red cabbage in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Austria, the red cabbage at Das Waldcafe is at worst, just as good and at best, far superior to any red cabbage I have ever tasted. Just one other point, Mr. Devaney statements about the prices at Das Waldcafe are wrong, the Gulasch is $9.75, the most expensive thing on the menu is $14.85! my question Mr. Devaney, have you ever actually been to Das Waldcafe? Just a question from a very satisfied customer.

We were raised in PA Dutch country, and have resided and traveled extensively throughout Germany for seven years. The "authenticy" of quality German cuisine at this restaurant was far below that of any autobahn gas station fast food stop. My wife's selection of a so-called veal cordon bleu was smaller than that of my computer mouse with less than the quality of MacDonalds' french fries and passable red cabbage. At $15, a real disappointment. But wait, I ordered the Hungarian goulash at $10, and was served a portion of ten dry beef cubes the size of dice, awash in a sea of greasy, tasteless sauce that the Campbell's company would have rejected as tomato soup. Accompanied by two golf ball-sized dry and flavorless potato balls with, again the passable red cabbage, it was terrible. The accompanying rolls were equally Waldcafe "quality". Save you money folks and try the Hot Dog King for a more authentic taste of Deutschland, save yourself $30, and come away satisfied!

We have visited this restaurant many times, but last night will be our last visit. For the second consecutive time, the service was deplorable. This was a Tuesday night, and they were only moderately busy. Our server was rather brusque, and took 15 minutes to bring our drink order. After we had waited 40 minutes, she unapologetically informed us they were out of pork schnitzels. We substituted veal in our orders and finally got our meals an hour after we sat down. Our server didn't even offer bread during the wait. The food at Das Waldcafe is always good, but be forewarned -- the service is not.

I found the food to be authentic and generous and I enjoyed the quiet atmosphere as well. I did not appreciate the service. When my family and our friends arrived, we given the impression that we were not wanted. Although the restaurant was not busy, we were told ther was no room available because we did have a reservation. Also, I don't think our children were welcomed either. The waitresses argued over who would serve us. When my friends son accidently broke his water glass, the waitress was reluctant to assist us. Besides the delicious meal, the whole experience was very unpleasant. I do not recommend this place to anyone with children.
