In reference to the afformentioned review that posted 2 stars on this amazing restaurant, you should give yourself an opportunity to try this place again. Lenny(the owner) is probably one of the best sushi chefs, and chef with overall knowledge in the art of Japenese cuisine in the entire Tidewater area. The first time I visited this restaurant was for my 23rd birthday, AMAZING!! Since my first visit i have probably dined at Hayashi 30 times at least. Every time I go there I get friendly service, the other sushi chefs are extremely knowledgable and also may very often create something special for you based on what your previous choices were, oh, and that dish is ALWAYS comped on the house. Every time I go there, the waitress knows my basics i.e. Ika Sansai, Hamachi Kamma, and a Lenny's roll to start. I have had nothing but exquisite experiences at Hayashi, in fact, it's a great place to bring a date or wife/husband. If I remember correctly they also have a live Jazz band every Friday night so of course the ambieance is amazing. Always getting extra sushi for free, and great atmosphere?.... Try it soon.

I loved the great chefs with lots of personality the last two visits I had. They're not afraid to show their funny side. When I went to Hayashi, Money was well spent for the anonymous amount of food received. all the chefs have their tricks down and prepare dinner with a show. Although I enjoyed the entertainment, the good service ended when I walked away from the front desk. The waitresses could smile a bit more and look alive. Other than that this restaurant would be recomended to anyone by all means.

After dining at the surrounding Japanese restaurants in the area, Hayashi, by far, has the best sushi rolls in town! Their sashimi is fresh, and their dinner entrees are delicious. The yakisoba and terriyaki dinners are family favorites, in addition to the Delta Force and Dynamite rolls. My family and I dine at Hayashi frequently, if not dining in, then we would order take-out. Definitely a great dining experience overall!

After seeing the fantastic commercials that have been aggressively aired in the Hampton Roads area the past several weeks... we finally decided to visit Hyashi Sushi & Grill in Newport News...
And we were so VERY disappointed… The initial impression had that "WOW" factor - a very beautifully designed restaurant with a very friendly and competent hostess to great and seat us... but the fun stopped there.
Our bill was $95 (with tax and a modest tip) and included appetizers, soup and salad, and two main entrees (one sushi and one ginger chicken dish).
The restaurant was NOT busy at all and there was plenty of wait staff on hand. It took over 45 minutes to get the appetizers (tempura shrimp, sashimi app, & yakitori). Before we were done with the apps – they brought the ginger chicken entree dish to the table. We had not seen the soup or salad courses yet. I sent the dinner back and asked for the soup and salads… specifically asking the server to have the meal re-cooked at the proper time and not just have it re-heated or placed under a heat lamp for 30 minutes.
After the soup and salad… the entrees were brought back out – the return of the ginger chicken… which, as I had feared, was the original one brought to the table 30 minutes earlier and my dinner, a sushi assortment… advertised as being 18 pieces (a 6-pc roll and 12 assorted, chef’s choice sushi)… what I got was one of the smallest rolls I have ever seen and only 8 pieces of sushi… and even worse – it tasted OLD and I am sure that, like the ginger chicken, it had been made at least 30 minutes earlier and then just sat somewhere. The sushi was dry and did not taste fresh.
I asked the waitress to send over a manager but one never showed up. So I asked another server for our bill because by this time our waitress was no where to be found.
After paying out $95.00, I was very upset and will not return until they have worked out the kinks of starting up a new restaurant and get some well-trained staff in place. The server knew nothing about japanese cuisine... She did not know the menu, she did not know how to serve, she did not know to bring soy sauce dishes to the table for the sushi and when asked… could not find any in the restaurant so brought me a alarge bowl instead!
I even tried calling a ouple of times afterwards to speak to someone on the management team... after being put on hold for 5 minutes both times - I gave up.
Hopefully they will get a hint that somethign is wring when they do not see repeat business and pay attention to feedback from their customers.
