Il Giardino

It doesn't take much to see why this Italian restaurant is a local’s favorite.

Located at the oceanfront is Il Giardino, an authentic Italian restaurant and piano bar. If you’re not familiar with what a restaurant and piano bar is, simply picture a large venue split into two halves. On one side is a high end Italian restaurant, while the other is a bar with a live pianist and entertainer.

Décor: If you were not just walking in off of Atlantic Ave., you would swear you were in Italy. White brick walls enclose the dining area, green air vents in the open ceiling blend well into all of the greenery surrounding you. Muted accents and speakers won’t draw your attention away from the earthy feel when seated. Brown wooden tables, chairs, 12x12 tiles, and wooden floor will give you the feeling of being outside in Italy.

Food: This may be one of the most authentic recipe-based restaurants you may experience. Everything from the bread to the entrée is well thought out, dressed beautifully, and well prepared.  For an appetizer you cannot go wrong with the mozzarella and fried peppers—the olives are perfect. For dinner, the shrimp and crab meat are actually shrimp and lumps of crab meat, not shredded strands found in other restaurants. For vegetarians the menu has a few dishes, you will find yourself wanting to return to try the others.

Price: With great food comes a hefty price in the case. Although you could probably put together a good meal for two for a reasonable price, you will be limiting yourself to things found elsewhere. If you don’t have a budget then you will definitely be pleased indulging in $30+ plates. Expect to spend over $65 for one appetizer, two entrées, and two soft drinks. Pasta, oven grilled pizzas, and fresh seafood comes in at various price points (the menu is posted outside at the entrance).

Service: Although the service started off a little shaky, the evening soon turned around. If you visit Il Giardinos ask for Jeff. He’s been there 19 years and knows the menu by heart forwards and backwards. If you’re stuck on what to get, ask for his suggestions, he will not steer you wrong. Your cup won’t reach half full, and your napkin will be placed in your lap through out the night. Even the restroom has a servant with cloth napkins to help dry your hands.

Perks: The experience doesn’t stop there. You will undoubtedly hear classics being performed by a solo vocalist/pianist next door.  Monday, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are extra special if you’d like to spend a little time on the dance floor. The live entertainment and extensive bar is an absolute treat and addition to the grown up experience. If you don’t mind the slightly older crowd, you’ll be just fine.

Il Giardino is a must visit. If only once, or for a special occasion, or if you are in the mood to splurge, you will see why this Italian restaurant is a local’s favorite. It may just become a favorite of yours!
