Amid a slew of big-city fast food chains, sits “Doumar’s,” a 1950s-style diner restaurant that started in Ocean View in 1907. Although from Monticello Avenue in Norfolk this restaurant may look low-key and out of place, Doumar’s has a very loyal and growing fan base in the downtown area.
Celebrating its 100th year in Norfolk, Doumar’s offers a variety of home-cooked favorites, its specialty being barbeque. Among the local favorites are its cheeseburgers and homemade shakes and ice creams. It’s rich in history and tradition in addition to being a cheap quality place to eat.
Food: Doumar’s offers a wide range of American favorites. They are most widely known for their pork barbeque and their custom-made ice cream served in hand-made cones. Other favorites include their ice cream sundaes and traditional hamburgers and hot dogs. Everything served in Doumar’s is guaranteed to be a high quality homemade-style meal.
Pricing: The prices at Doumar’s are some of the lowest prices I have seen in years for some very American favorites including hot dogs, hamburgers, egg sandwiches and milkshakes. You can get a lot of quality home cooked food for not a lot of money. Nothing on the menu is over $5.00 unless you want to take home a jar of hand made ice cream cones, of course.
Atmosphere: It’s like a time warp just stepping out into the parking lot. At first glance the curbside drive-in style parking lot, with restaurant attendees delivering food in stark white uniforms complete with matching hats, is a blast from the past, but stepping inside is a bigger shock. With rows of old school soda shop bar stools, the whole place just sends you back in time.
Staff & Service: The staff members were some of the nicest people I have met at a restaurant, in this area, in years. They were quality, down-to-earth people whose only motives were to make your visit as pleasant as possible. They made sure we were taken care of promptly, greeted with friendly smiles/hello's, and our food was made and brought out within minutes of ordering.
Overall: From its old newspaper clippings hanging on the walls, to the bright orange vinyl booth and bar stool covers, Doumar’s just gives a “right at home” feeling. The walls boast of their years of success and achievement and the owner himself, Mr. Doumar, eats in and visits regularly. Doumar’s is a very locals-friendly diner restaurant that offers more than just quality food. It’s a wonderful dining experience and laid-back quality hangout.
