You loved the movie, what about the DVD?
Find out as we examine the extras on this week's best movie DVDs...
“DRILLBIT TAYLOR”
Stars: Owen Wilson, Leslie Mann
Director: Steven Brill (“Little Nicky”)
Formats: Regular DVD, Extended DVD, Blu-ray
What we said: "The humor, the bullies and the gawky heroes all just sit flatly on the screen rather than exploding off of it."
Extras: Regular DVD: Commentary; “The Writers Get a
Chance to Talk,” an interview with screenwriters Seth Rogen and
Kistofer Brown; deleted scenes; gag reel; trailers.
"Extended Survival Edition" DVD and Blu-ray: Regular DVD
features plus a longer version of the movie; and bonus featurettes:
“Rap Off,” about how the kids learned their mad skills; “Sprinkler
Day,” about the sprinkler scene; “Bully,” a look at the film’s
antagonists; “Directing Kids,” a tongue-in-cheek look at working with
the younger actors; “The Real Don: Danny McBride,” a look at Drill’s
sidekick.
Worth watching: “Bully,” since, as it turns out, the jerks in
the movie are not actually jerks in real life. Or at least not in this
featurette.
Worth skipping: “Rap Off.” We all know that you should leave the rapping to the professionals.
Worth adding: A featurette on how you can get that guy in your office to stop bullying you because you liked this movie enough to buy it.
Buy, rent, or ignore: Buy the Extended or Blu-ray versions; Ignore the Regular one.
“TYLER PERRY’S MEET THE BROWNS”
Stars: Angela Bassett, Rick Fox, Jenifer Lewis
Director: Tyler Perry (“Madea’s Family Reunion”)
Formats: DVD, Blu-ray
What we said: "This
cheerfully dim-witted film is ultimately a step backwards from its
predecessor, the ensemble-driven 'Why Did I Get Married?'"
Extras: DVD: “Meet the Manns,” “Angela and Rick: Meet the
Lovebirds,” “The Browns Are Born: The Story of ‘Meet the Browns’” and
“Jenifer Lewis: Unleashed” featurettes; digital copy.
Blu-ray: DVD features plus three additional featurettes: “Mr.
Brown’s Fashion Breakdown,” “The Music of ‘Meet the Browns’” and
“Bakin’ It and Shakin’ It With Mr. Brown.”
Worth watching: “Jenifer Lewis: Unleashed” because she’s hysterical enough when she has to rein it in.
Worth skipping: “The Music of ‘Meet The Browns.’” The film’s
soundtrack does include some pretty goods tunes, so you’re better off
just buying the CD.
Worth adding: A commentary by Perry, Bassett and Lewis…but only if it’s “Unleashed” as well.
Buy, rent, or ignore: Rent.
“POINT BREAK: PURE ADRENALINE EDITION”
Stars: Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze
Director: Kathryn Bigelow (“Near Dark”)
Formats: Blu-ray
What we say: Keanu, starring as FBI agent Johnny Utah, goes
undercover as a surfer to catch a gang of Halloween mask-wearing bank
robbers. Genius.
Extras: Deleted scenes; “It’s Make or Break,” “Ride the Wave,”
“Adrenaline Junkies” and “On Location: Malibu” featurettes; trailers;
still gallery.
Worth watching: For the ladies, the still gallery, since it has
all the advantages of being able to stare at Keanu without his pesky
talking ruining things. For the guys, the trailers, since they’ll
remind you that there’s more to this movie than pretty boys.
Worth skipping: “On Location: Malibu.” It’ll make you feel bad that your vacation this year was in your own backyard (stupid gas prices).
Worth adding: A commentary by Reeves and Swayze, but only if
they agree not to spend the whole time talking about how funny it is
that someone paid them to surf and wear Halloween masks all day.
Buy, rent, or ignore: Buy.
